Many times, talented students give up their dreams of higher education midway due to poverty at home. Even though they want to pursue courses like engineering, medical or management, they hesitate because they cannot afford the fees that run into lakhs of rupees.
The central government has implemented an important scheme to help such students. It is the “PM Vidya Lakshmi Yojana”.
This scheme is currently in operation and the government has allocated around Rs 3,600 crore for the period 2024-25 to 2030-31. About 22 lakh students will benefit from this, and 7 lakh new students will benefit from this scheme.
What is PM Vidya Lakshmi Yojana?
In simple terms, it is a system of providing easy loans to students pursuing higher education without the need for any mortgage or guarantor. Not only the loan, the government also provides a huge concession in the interest on the loan as per the family income.
The main objective of this scheme is that students who get admission in prestigious educational institutions of the country should not be deprived of education due to financial difficulties.
Who gets what benefit?
There are two types of benefits in this scheme based on the income limit:
1.) For those with an income of less than Rs. 4.5 lakh: If the annual income of the student’s family is less than Rs. 4.5 lakh, they will get a complete interest subsidy (100% Interest Subsidy) on the education loan they take. That is, the government will bear the interest till the completion of the course. This comes under the PM-USP CSIS scheme.
2.) For those with an income of Rs. 4.5 lakh to 8 lakh: If the annual income of the family is more than Rs. 4.5 lakh and is within Rs. 8 lakh, such students will get 3% interest subsidy on loans up to Rs. 10 lakh.
3.) Guarantee for loans up to Rs. 7.5 lakh: Without any income limit, the government will provide a 75% credit guarantee for loans up to Rs. 7.5 lakh to all eligible students. This will enable banks to provide loans to students without hesitation.
