Millions of families rely on dairy farming as much as agriculture to make a living. The government has implemented the Ksheera Sanjeevini Scheme to improve the socio-economic status of rural women through dairy farming. The Karnataka State Rural Livelihood Promotion Society (KSRLPS) and the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) have jointly launched the “Ksheera Sanjeevini” scheme. The main objective of this scheme is to economically empower poor women in rural areas and encourage dairy farming as their source of livelihood. What is the Ksheera Sanjeevini Yojana?
Ksheera Sanjeevini Yojana is a project of the Government of Karnataka and the Karnataka Milk Federation, which aims to empower poor rural women through dairy farming and by promoting women’s dairy cooperatives. Launched in collaboration with the Karnataka State Rural Livelihood Mission, this initiative provides training, financial support and resources to women engaged in dairy farming. This will increase their income and socio-economic status. The first phase of the project was launched in April 2014. Currently, Ksheera Sanjeevini Yojana is being implemented in its 3rd phase.
Project Objectives and Goals
The main objective of Ksheera Sanjeevini Yojana is to provide a source of income to women belonging to the backward sections of the society, i.e. Backward Castes, Minorities, Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes, BPL families and economically backward women. It is intended to help about 10,000 women through this scheme. Ksheera Sanjeevini Yojana has been implemented in all the districts of Karnataka and the facilities of the scheme are being expanded as per the demand.
Main benefits of the project
Women Empowerment:
The project will help in the empowerment of rural women by providing them with a sustainable source of income.
Establishment of Cooperative Societies:
It has helped in the establishment of 250 women’s dairy cooperative societies.
Assistance for purchasing cattle:
With the aim of enabling women to lead a self-sufficient life, an interest-free loan of Rs. 46,000 is being provided to purchase cattle.
Income Increase: The scheme aims to increase the monthly net income of women participating in the scheme from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 3,500.
Employment Generation: The project will create direct employment opportunities for rural women.
Financial Assistance: Beneficiaries will receive interest-free loans and grants for operating expenses.
Training and Resources: Training is provided on livestock husbandry, management, and animal nutrition.
Animal Health Care and Insurance: It provides livestock health care and insurance.
Eligibility Criteria
Women who want to benefit from the scheme must meet the following criteria:
The beneficiaries of the scheme must be women.
Must belong to socially and economically backward classes, minorities, Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes and families below the poverty line.
KMF identifies eligible beneficiaries through a survey of members of these associations.
