Aadhaar Card: How to check if your Aadhaar card is secure and make it safe?

As Aadhaar becomes a crucial part of our digital identity, ensuring its security is more important than ever. Since Aadhaar card is linked to your bank account, mobile number, demat account and government schemes, any misuse can have serious consequences.

But how can we check if your Aadhaar is being misused? Here is a step-by-step guide to detect Aadhaar fraud and keep it safe.

How to check if Aadhaar is being misused?

  • Visit the UIDAI website – go to uidai.gov.in.
  • Enter your Aadhaar details – Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the captcha code.
  • Login with OTP – You will receive a one-time password (OTP) on your registered mobile number.
  • Check authentication history – This section provides details of when and where your Aadhaar has been used.
  • Check transactions – If you notice any unauthorized activity, take immediate action.

Ways to secure Aadhaar

  1. Lock/Unlock Aadhaar
UIDAI allows you to lock your Aadhaar to prevent unauthorized access to biometric data (fingerprints and iris scans).
Visit uidai.gov.in and log in to the ‘My Aadhaar’ section. Select the ‘Biometric Lock’ option. Enter the OTP and choose to lock/unlock your Aadhaar.
  2. Use a Virtual ID (VID)
Instead of sharing your Aadhaar number frequently, generate a VID for secure transactions. Go to the UIDAI portal and click on ‘Generate VID’. Enter your Aadhaar number and receive your VID via OTP. This virtual ID can be updated at any time.
  3. Manage Aadhaar services via SMS
UIDAI allows you to manage Aadhaar services via SMS. To generate a VID, send GVID Aadhaar number to 1947. To lock/unlock Aadhaar, send GETOTP Aadhaar number to 1947. By following these steps, you can ensure that your Aadhaar is safe and protected from misuse.
