In today’s digital age, Aadhaar card is a must for children. Whether it’s for school admission, passport, opening a bank account or availing various government benefits – even babies need Aadhaar. It can be obtained at birth.

The process is very simple and can be started at home.

Why do children need an Aadhaar card?

Having an Aadhaar card from birth helps children to benefit from several official services at an early stage. Aadhaar is required for many facilities including opening a bank account in the name of the child, school enrolment, insurance, etc.

If one of the parents has an Aadhaar card, then the child can get Aadhaar without biometrics. Yes, children do not need fingerprints or iris scan till the age of 5. However, biometrics need to be updated in the 5th year.

How to Apply:

You can start the entire process on the official website of UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India). Here is the step-by-step guide:

  • Step 1: Visit the UIDAI website: https://uidai.gov.in
  • Step 2: Select “Book Appointment” under the “Aadhaar Enrolment” section on the home page.
  • Step 3: Select your nearest enrolment centre. Then enter the child’s name, date of birth and parents’ details. Then you can confirm the e-appointment.
  • Step 4: On the appointment day, you have to attend the selected Aadhaar centre with your children. You need to carry these documents with you:

Child’s birth certificate or hospital discharge paper

Aadhaar card of one of the parents

  • Step 5: Biometrics are not required for children below 5 years of age. A photograph will be taken at this stage. However, fingerprints and iris scan will be taken for children above 5 years of age.
