Are you using WhatsApp or Telegram? Then this news is for you. Starting tomorrow, i.e. March 1, 2026, the central telecom department is implementing very strict rules regarding communication apps. From now on, WhatsApp will not work if you do not have a SIM card in your mobile!
What is the ‘SIM card binding’ rule?
Till now, once WhatsApp or Telegram was verified, it was possible to use the app via WiFi even if the SIM card was removed from the phone. However, according to the new ‘SIM card binding’ rule:
App locked if there is no SIM: WhatsApp will automatically log out if there is no active SIM card in your smartphone.
Continuous verification: It is now mandatory to have a SIM in the phone for the app to work. Communication services will be stopped as soon as the SIM is removed.
WhatsApp Web also affected: WhatsApp Web used on a computer or laptop will now also log out every 6 hours.
What is the reason for this government decision?
The central telecom department has taken this step to prevent increasing cyber crimes and frauds through fake accounts.
Fraud busting: Cybercriminals were using such apps on phones without SIM cards to commit crimes.
Identity verification: SIM binding can ensure that each account is always connected to the official mobile number.
Note: This order was issued in November last year. Social media companies were given a deadline of February 28 to make this change. That deadline ends today and the new changes will be implemented from tomorrow.
Tip: To keep your WhatsApp always up and running, make sure your primary SIM card is in the phone and don’t forget to take a data backup.
