The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) aims to provide affordable housing to all eligible families in the country, especially those from the economically weaker sections. It was launched in 2015 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra with the aim of providing housing to every Indian.
PMAY – Urban (PMAY-U): It focuses on addressing the housing shortage in urban areas, especially slum dwellers and people belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Low Income Group (LIG) and Middle Income Group (MIG).
PMAY – Rural (PMAY-G): It focuses on addressing the housing shortage in rural areas. It provides financial assistance to the rural poor living in shabby houses or who do not have any houses.
How to get financial assistance under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana PMAY?
PMAY- Rural residents of the country will get financial assistance of up to Rs 1.3 lakh based on their financial status and area. Apart from this, they can also get ₹12,000 assistance for the construction of toilets under the Swachh Bharat Mission scheme.
PMAY-Urban: People in urban areas, especially those belonging to economically backward classes, can get financial assistance through this scheme. Through this scheme, they can get ₹1.5 lakh assistance from the central government for the construction of a house.
Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS): This scheme provides interest subsidy to those who take loans for buying or constructing a house. It is applicable to the economically weaker section, low income group and middle income group.
Slum Upgradation: Upgrading slums in urban areas and providing better housing facilities to the residents.
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Who is eligible for the PMAY scheme?
To apply for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, there are some important eligibility criteria. Let’s see what they are,
Applicants should not own a house or their family members (husband, wife and unmarried children) should not own a pucca house anywhere in India.
Income Criteria:
EWS (Economically Weaker Section): First, annual income up to 3 lakhs
LIG (Low Income Group): Annual income between ₹3 lakhs to ₹6 lakhs.
MIG-I (Middle Income Group-I): Annual income between ₹6 lakhs to ₹12 lakhs.
MIG-II (Middle Income Group-II): Annual income between ₹12 lakhs to ₹18 lakhs.
Other criteria:
Residents of shacks or semi-detached houses (in rural areas).
Families identified on the basis of statistics as per Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011.
Families with private vehicles, farm machinery, fridges or taxable income are generally not eligible.
Women’s ownership: In EWS and LIG categories, it is mandatory for the house to be owned by the woman or jointly with men. Exceptions to this rule can be made only if there are no women in the family.
How to apply for PMAY scheme?
How to apply online?
- Visit the official website of PMAY (pmaymis.gov.in).
- Eligible candidates click on Apply for PMAY-U, Apply for PMAY-G option.
- Enter your Aadhaar number and verify (via OTP).
- Verify eligibility by entering your income, state and household details.
- Fill the form, upload the required documents (identity proof, address proof, income proof, property documents).
- Submit the application and you can track the status of your application.
How to apply offline?
- Visit the Common Service Centres (CSC) set up by the State Government or Union Territory.
- Ask for the PMAY application form, fill it and pay the required fee (approx. ₹25+GST).
- Submit the filled form and documents to the staff.
- Gram Panchayat Survey: In rural areas, Gram Panchayats conduct a survey of the homeless and landless. You can also apply by participating in this survey.
