Verifying your Aadhaar biometrics provides additional protection against misuse of your fingerprint and iris data. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) offers an easy online process to lock or unlock these details when needed.
Biometric data like fingerprints and iris scans are unique to you and can be used for Aadhaar authentication. If this data is compromised, it can lead to identity theft or unauthorized transactions. Locking biometrics ensures that they cannot be used without your consent.
Step 1 – Login to MyAadhaar Portal
Visit the MyAadhaar portal and log in using your Aadhaar number, the provided captcha, and the one-time password (OTP) sent to your registered mobile number.
Step 2 – Select Lock/Unlock Biometrics
Once logged in, look for the “Lock/Unlock Biometrics” option and click on it.
Step 3 – Understand the benefits
Read the information provided about how the locking feature works and its benefits. Click Next to proceed.
Step 4 – Agree
Tick the Agree box to confirm your agreement with the terms, and then click Next.
Step 5 – Confirm Locking
A confirmation message will appear indicating that your biometrics have been successfully locked.
How to unlock when needed?
You can unlock your biometrics at any time by following the same process and selecting Unlock Biometrics instead. This is useful when you need to authenticate an Aadhaar-based service.
It is a safe practice to lock your biometrics by default and unlock them only when needed to prevent unauthorized access.
