To put it simply, being an Indian, crossing the border of India and moving to another country requires a passport. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Government of India have launched Passport Service Centers to facilitate online access for its citizens and outsiders. Passport and Passport related services are provided through Passport Services in a simple, efficient and transparent process. Apart from providing a nationwide network of government employees and offices, it also connects with the State Police and India Post for delivery of passports to verify applicant’s credentials. Anyone who wants to leave India and comes to the country should have a valid passport or travel document.
Various passports and travel registers are issued by the Government of India under the Passport Act 1967. Common Passport, Diplomatic Passport, Officers Passport, Emergency Certificate and Identity Certificate for Purpose. The last two registrations are issued only for mandatory emergency purposes. Steps to apply for passport online in India:
- Register through Passport Service online portal.
- Login to the Passport Service Online Portal with a registered login ID.
- Click on the applicable link for the new passport / passport re-sharing.
- Fill and submit the required details in the application.
- Click the Payment and Schedule Appointment link in the View Saved / Submitted Applications screen to schedule an appointment. Online payment is made compulsory to book an appointment at all Passport Service Centers / Passport Offices. Online payments can be made using any methods such as credit / debit card, internet banking, and associate banks and other banks.
- Click the Print Application Receipt link to print the application receipt containing the application reference number / appointment number. During your visit to the passport office, you will receive an appointment proof with your appointment details.
- Visit the Passport Service Center or the Regional Passport Office where the time is booked, along with the original documents.
